I meet some cool people on a bike. Obviously, there’s the team, but what I’m really talking about is the people you meet randomly on some ride or another.
I met this guy, Mike who is a hard-core cyclist, has won the Alpine Challenge and Tour de Poway among some other exceptional results. He’s done le Etape several times and we talked a bit about my trip to France this year. I went full-out trying to keep up with him and I think we mutually cranked each other’s legs off.
I met this racer-chick (another VeloBella) who races mostly triathalons and holds a Cat IV road license too. We went through a cloud of gnats together (yuck!).
I met this guy, Grant, who actually runs a cyclo-tour company to Europe – imagine that! I tried bravely to keep up with him going up Poway grade and not make it look like he was torching my legs (he was). He was on his way to Lake Cuyamaca, btw…
I met a guy who once camped on the side of Alpe d’Huez for three days as the Tour came through. He was there when Lance won the time-trial there.
Look, I could go on and on. What’s the lesson? Chat up the cyclist you’re stopped at the light with. You have no idea who she is.

I would, but I’m too busy getting yelled out by people in their cars and other cyclists telling me how to ride.
You have to keep up with these people to have a conversation with them. Still working on that part.
