On Day One, after driving to Lone Pine, we climb Onion Valley (13 miles, climbing 5300’)
Our first climb starts with a 6 mile straight road on the alluvial fan. We will drive up half of the alluvial fan, because we can. After the first few miles this mountain has 18 hairpin turns on great pavement, considered one of the best descents anywhere.

Sweet… you gotta love a nicely paved road. Feels good going up and kicks ass on the descent. I’m sure you too could handle 13,000 feet in a day.
Now that looks like a great climb!
The top looks just about the same altitude as the highest paved roads in Europe – about 9200 feet.
The thin air at that height can cost you 10% – 15% of strength.
