I run standard Conti tubes mostly, the ultralight ones seem like they might be puncture prone, but I dunno.

I have some friends who've done the Death Ride, but not me. We use this book The Complete Guide to Climbing (by Bike) which lists the top 100 climbs in North America. The climbs we did on our Monster Climbs trip were #4, 5, 7 and 9. You'll notice that Onion Valley is the cover shot. Highly recommend the book, btw.

Thanks Arlyn!!! I wonder too if thicker tubes are advisable??? I always use "ultralight" Performance tubes, but maybe a heavier tube would be safer. What do you think? Someday, I want to do all the climbs you mention. Have you done the Markleeville "Death ride" (I haven't)? I wonder how those climbs (Monitor, Carson, Ebbetts passes) compare to these epic southern Sierra monsters! Thanks again!!! Brian

@Brian: Thanks! Yeah, I worried about heat flats but didn't experience any. Sometimes I would rest on the descent though to let my hands uncramp :) I ran 100-110 psi the whole time, I know some guys lowered their psi though. Of all the climbs we did, I found Bristlecone to be the most difficult, it was really long and at the end of a very challenging trip so my legs were fried :)

@Jeff: Hey, that's cool. I wasn't on that ride (I was at the TdF) but I forwarded your info to some of the other guys. I love HVR, up or down :)

Great blog! Can I ask a question? I've done Horseshoe too and was scared to death of getting a heat flat on the way down. Did you guys have any on your climbs? Did you run less psi in your tires? If so, what was it? Of all the climbs, which was most difficult? Thanks!!!

I rode up on some of the “Descenders” on the Hwy 56 bike trail in San Diego this Saturday about 11am. I was the old guy on the black and white carbon Douglas bike…hanging on the back wheel of the tall dude on the yellow Fuji. I could not find the descender.org website so drop me an email, perhaps I could join you on some rides. I like to climb but I’m actually much better on the descents like HVR, South Grade, etc
