38m: Who wants it more?

by Arlyn on December 23, 2008

Mark says that the guy who wins the bike race is the guy who wants it the most. He knows this because he’s won more bike races than I’ll ever attend. And he’s right of course. I just sigh and look down, because I don’t know if I want it badly enough.

Torrey Pines State Park

I’m doing sprint intervals up Torrey Pines hill, a nice 1-mile, 8% grade at the coast. What I do is sprint to max cadence without shifting and then rest. I’m on my 10th rep and it’s getting hard to reach max cadence.

“Who wants it more?”

I decide to climb my second lap up Torrey Pines in 53×21, out of the saddle the whole way. It really hurts near the top and I want to quit early.

“Who wants it more?”

Pacific Ocean from the bridge

Climbing out of Torrey Pines lagoon with a Dewalt rider on my wheel, I sprint on the bridge. All I can hear is “Faster! Faster! Faster!” I get to 102% of HR max.

“Who wants it more?”

More intervals up Scripps Highlands. It’s much steeper than Torrey and I can only manage 12 kicks per interval. Why can’t I take the easy way home?

“Who wants it more?”

Altogether, I managed 16 intervals above 95% HR max and a bunch more where heart rate was not significant. I really want it.

But, do I want it enough?

Wow…I can almost feel your pain from here in PA…yeesh! Keep hammering, Arlyn. You’ll be in the mix when the time comes, and I think that alone will make all the hard work worth doing.

Do you get emotional when you read this post? …then you want it more!
