The Answer to a Question

by Arlyn on February 4, 2009

Ihave completed my training to race my first USCF road race. I’ve trained hard and consistently for the last 14 weeks and know that I’m stronger and faster on a bike than ever. The only thing left for me to do is some recovery, eat well and get plenty of rest.

A Bike RaceThe weather forecast is calling for rain on Saturday. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad for me so I’ll say that it’s good. I’m good at suffering and maybe squalid conditions will trim some talent from the peloton.

I overhauled my bike last weekend, servicing all the parts we “should” but never do. I cleaned every nook and cranny, replaced the back tire and chain, and even rewrapped the bars. My bike is ready and waiting for me.

Several of my Descenders teammates are racing the Cat 5 with me. We’ve discussed strategy and tactics and have a plan. The team is ready to race.

I lay awake at night, trying to visualize how the race will go. It’s going to be hard, probably much harder than I expect. It’s going to require me to commit more than I expect. And at some point, I’ll have to answer Mark’s question, “Do you want it enough?”

I get it now that the answer to that question is the whole reason I’m racing. I want to know if I am strong enough and want it enough to race with the “big boys”. I want to prove that I can do it.

So, good question, Mark. Do I want it enough? I suppose we’ll know by noon on Saturday.
